Silvertärnan, which was built in 1986 at Djupviks Varv, started a new and for the travelers more comfortable standard among Styrsöbolaget's ships in the southern archipelago. The decks were flatter than on previous ships, the saloon bulkheads were bright, the chairs covered in fabric and there were full carpets in the saloons.A café was set up on the upper deck. However, the full-covering carpets were not a success and were replaced with more practical carpets and new chairs after a few years. From 1986, Silvertärnan replaced an earlier namesake that had been built in 1976.The hull, which is built in aluminum, is heavily dimensioned and reinforced for walking in ice.The length is 30.22 m and the width 7.72 m. The passenger capacity is a maximum of 389 people. There are 196 seats in the lounges, of which 47 are in the café.A second upgrade with new seats was made in 2007. Since 2020, Silvertärnan is powered by two Volvo Penta D13 MH engines with a total output of 1000 hp (735 kW).In connection with the engine change in 2020, the main engines were fitted with catalysts that clean the exhaust gases. Each engine drives an adjustable propeller made by Berg. The speed is 13.5 knots.
