After agreement with the traffic manager Västtrafik, Styrsöbolaget ordered two catamaran-type speedboats that were built in carbon fiber-reinforced sandwich construction at the Brödrene Aa shipyard in Hyen, Norway, for delivery in 2010. The background was the need to speed up the trips on the long line from Saltholmen to Donsö and Vrångö.Valö, which was the first speedboat, was delivered on April 16 and was put into regular service on June 20, 2010. The name Valö comes from the lighthouse that is the most southerly in the southern archipelago before the open Kattegat takes over.Valö is 27.09 m long and 8.39 m wide. The passenger capacity is 163 people, which is equal to the number of seats in the saloon. Two MAN D2842 LE410 diesel engines of a combined 2,038 hp (1,498 kW) each drive their own adjustable Servogear propeller. The engines were replaced with new ones in December 2014. The speed is 28.5 knots with full load.
