Introduction to the cruise

The ferry, which is a double-ended shuttle ferry, can also be called a combi ferry. It is a reserve for the Lindholmspiren-Stenpiren line and is also used for freight traffic in the southern archipelago, whereby the passenger module is lifted ashore to get a free deck for cars or goods. The ferry was built in 1954 at Bröderna Larssons Varv in Kristinehamn for the Swedish Road Administration under the name Alnö 2. It served Alnö outside Sundsvall until the Alnö bridge replaced it.After the name change to Ferry 190, it came to the ferry lines across the Ångermanälven and received reinforced car tires to cope with the heavy timber trucks on the Hemsöleden. When the ferry was bought by Styrsöbolaget in 1979, the name was changed to Vira and the traffic task became driving vehicles to the southern archipelago. In 2003, it was named Älv-Vira in connection with conversion to a combi ferry.Älv-Vira, which is 28.20 m long and 8.09 m wide, has an ice-reinforced steel hull. With the passenger module on board, the ferry can take 300 passengers. There are 34 seats in the salon and plenty of standing room.During the fall of 2015, two new Scania DI13 engines with a total of 800 hp (588 kW) were installed. These have been fitted with particle filters in autumn 2016.The engines drive an adjustable Jönköping propeller at each end of the ferry. The speed is 11.5 knots.
