Älveli and Älvfrida belong to Västtrafik and are double-ended shuttle ferries intended for Västtrafik's line 286 Älvsnabbare.The ferries are designed for quick boarding and disembarking for travelers both with and without bicycles on short journeys across the river.The ferries were ordered by Västtrafik and built in 2014-2015 at Uudenkaupungin Työvene/Nystads Arbetsbåtar in Uusikaupunki/Nystad, Finland.Älveli was delivered to Västtrafik in Gothenburg on 8 January 2015 and Älvfrida on 27 March 2015.The ferries are owned by Västtrafik and leased by Styrsöbolaget, which manages their staffing, operation and maintenance.The start of traffic on line 286 took place on 30 March 2015 for Älveli and 27 April for Älvfrida.Before that, however, the ferries had run sporadically on the line after training crews and tuning the technology on board.The ferries, which are built in steel, are 32.99 m long and with a maximum width of 8.71 m. They are reinforced for walking in ice.The passenger capacity is 298 people and there is room for 80 bicycles.The ferries are designed to have a low fuel consumption and are powered by diesel-electric machinery.The generator sets produce electricity for propeller engines and other electrical consumers on board.The two generator sets are each powered by a Scania DI09 engine of 350 hp (257 kW) each, which is equipped with a particle filter.The ferries have a Rolls Royce Azimuth truster propeller assembly at each end.The units are reversible 360 degrees and have double counter-rotating propellers.The speed is 11 knots.
